Introduction

In modern “pop culture” the drinking of a red wine is considered much more sophisticated than drinking a white wine, at least in North Americ and when it comes to “pleasure drinking” and not to combining it with food.

Where exactly this preference stems from is a bit of a mystery, but if one had to guess the association with France and Italy (both known for their reds) probably factors into this.

Interestingly enough what makes a red wine a red wine is that the skin is left on the grape after crushing and fermented with the rest, which allows the pigments to “leach” into the wine. White wines in contrast are seperated from their skin and thus do not show the distinctive dark red.
